At age eighteen, Bob Taylor had the opportunity to purchase American Dream, a guitar shop where he had been employed. He partnered with Listug and they changed the name, at first, to Westland Music Company. Later they decided to shorten the name to something that could fit on the headstock of a guitar. Taylor was chosen over Listug because the partners agreed that it sounded more American. Taylor employs more than 700 people in their two factories, one in El Cajon and one in Tecate, Mexico, where less expensive instruments and cases are made. The company added electric guitars to its product selection only a decade ago, in 2005. In January 2014, the US State Department presented the company with an Award for Corporate Excellence, in appreciation of their adherence to responsible practices in the use of ebony for their products.
Famous for combining technology with craftsmanship, Taylor’s guitars are often named as the guitars that are easiest to play while still producing an excellent sound. The company led the industry in the use of computer technology and sophisticated laser machinery, and Bob Taylor is revered as a revolutionary maker of acoustic guitars. Impressive innovations by the Taylor company include the New Technology (trademarked) Neck, the Expression System pickup, and the T5: the world’s first genuinely hybrid acoustic/electric guitar which can produce amplified acoustic sound, full-on heavy metal sound, and other variations, with the use of a five-way switch. Though Bob Taylor had dismissed many requests to create a solid body model, feeling that he had nothing inspiring to add, he jumped at the chance to create something entirely new with the T5.
Taylor guitars are available in a number of shapes and over a dozen beautiful varieties of wood, so there is something to suit the aesthetic of any artist or band. Taylor makes guitars for varying budgets, and is a favorite of many artists for the easy playability, beautifully detailed construction, and impressive appearance of all of its instruments.
Artists who use and recommend Taylor guitars include Prince, Taylor Swift, Jason Mraz, Zac Brown, Clint Black, Don Felder of the Eagles, Joss Stone, and many others.
