The original Australian guitar builder. Maton build acoustic guitars from all solid wood. Maton has a full range from the small travel sized guitar called the Mini Maton right through to the top of the line Maton Messiah EM100C.
Family-owned Australian company Maton has been manufacturing guitars and other fretted instruments since 1946. Brothers Reg May (a wood machinist) and Bill Ray (a jazz musician, woodwork teacher, and luthier) had run a small operation called Maton Stringed Instruments and Repairs for some years. They specialized in producing modestly priced instruments, crafted from Australian woods.
In the 1960s, the brothers decided to expand into the electric guitar and amplifier market, originally using the name Magnetone. Maton was able to make a name for themselves in the world of Australian rock and roll in the late fifties, thanks largely to the Australian tariff that made imported guitars much less affordable than those locally produced. Maton guitars were consequently used by many well-known Australian artists. Additionally, the company sealed one of the first sponsorship deals ever struck in Australian rock when they supplied local band The Strangers with a distinctive set of guitars and basses.
Today, Maton still specializes in creating guitars from Australian timbers, including bunya, Blackwood, Queensland Maple, Queensland Walnut, and Satin Box. Bill May is considered by many Australian luthiers to be the founding father of their industry. The Maton company is still innovating, still testing new techniques and materials in their quest to create the world’s most perfect instruments.
Maton manufactures its own pickups and they consider this vital to maintaining the sound integrity of the guitar and of it internal amplification system. They are particularly proud of their Maton AP4 Pickup System and APMic system, one which uses both the piezo-based system and a microphone placed in the body of the guitar, enabling it to capture the natural acoustic beauty of its tone.
Famous artists who have proudly used and recommended Maton guitars include Keith Urban, Neil Finn, Josh Pike, Joe Robinson, Adam Harvey, Adam Brand, and Vance Joy.
